Kiawah Island Pedestrian & Bike Bridge

Thomas & Hutton was contracted by the Town of Kiawah, SC, LLC to perform the structural engineering and design services for a new pedestrian/bike bridge adjacent to the existing vehicular concrete bridge at the entrance to Kiawah Island.
The new 8-foot wide by 200-foot long concrete pedestrian bridge will span the Kiawah River and be immediately adjacent to the existing 2-lane concrete vehicular bridge structure. The new pedestrian structure will be a part of the Town’s new pedestrian parkway path project and will link the landside trails across the two sides of the River.
Thomas & Hutton’s responsibilities included design, layout, construction planning and coordination of with the Town and community of Kiawah Island.
The new structure consisted of concrete pile foundations supported precast concrete deck panels and timber guardrails providing separation and protection of the public adjacent to the vehicular traffic on the adjacent bridge.
