Project Description:

Thomas & Hutton was hired by two clients, Berkeley County and Berkeley County Water & Sanitation, to perform engineering and design services for the new Volvo plant in Berkeley County, South Carolina.

Currently, Volvo has assembly plants in Sweden, Belgium, and China. The Swedish automaker, however, is keen on expanding its markets, and their first step is to build their first ever assembly plant in the United States. Berkeley County is not far from the booming city of Charleston, which makes it an ideal spot for a large assembly plant.

Thomas & Hutton is contracted to design temporary and permanent water and sewer systems. We are contracted to design the following for Berkeley County Water and Sanitation:

  • One 350 gpm potable water well
  • 2000 linear feet of 8-inch diameter temporary water main
  • One 80 gpm temporary sewer pump station
  • 10,800 linear feet of 4-inch diameter temporary force main
  • One 1,400 gpm regional sewer pump station
  • 7,000 linear feet of 10-inch diameter force main
  • 33,000 linear feet of offsite 14-inch and 16-inch diameter water transmission mains
  • One 750,000 gallon elevated storage tank

    We are contracted to design the following for Berkeley County:

  • 7,300 linear feet of 8-inch, 10-inch, and 12-inch diameter on-site water mains
  • 15,400 linear feet of 8-inch, 10-inch, and 12-inch diameter gravity sewer
  • 3 on-site lift stations (sizes unknown)
  • 3,000 linear feet of on-site force mains (sizes unknown)
