Learn Beyond Your Major
Most students understand their major. Fewer understand how an entire project comes together.
Throughout the summer, interns participate in learning sessions covering civil engineering, planning and landscape architecture, site predevelopment and economic development, drone and LiDAR surveying, and other disciplines that shape the built environment. Each session provides another piece of the puzzle, helping interns understand how projects move from an early idea through design and construction.
T&H Learning and Development Specialist – Jacob Hewitt says the goal isn’t simply to teach interns what they’re doing, but helping them understand why they’re doing it.
Principal and Civil Group Leader Felipe Toledo, PE, explains it this way: “You’ll learn how landscape architecture, civil, transportation, environmental, water resources, structural, and survey all fit into the picture.”
That perspective reflects how projects succeed at T&H. Different disciplines share knowledge, solve challenges together, and contribute to one outcome.
Work that Matters
Interns don’t spend the summer watching from the sidelines. T&H Designer Katie Johnson, PE, explained that T&H’s internship program is designed to prepare students for the type of work they will encounter after graduation.
From site visits like the Hyundai Motor Group Meta plant America to collaborating with project teams in the office, interns experience how planning, engineering, permitting, and construction work together to move projects forward. “As an intern you are treated as an employee,” Felipe says.
That trust creates opportunities to contribute meaningful work.
“I’m drawing up concepts for a roadside entrance sign for a new industrial park. The reason why it’s super exciting is because I’ve been given a lot of freedom to use my own style and ideas, and it makes me feel like I’m really considered as part of the design staff. Katie Reed, now a Civil Designer who previously interned at T&H, remembers the experience simply: “I wasn’t just doing busy work all the time. I got to see what you would do in this job.”
Civil Designer Will Webb encourages interns to approach every assignment with an “exhibit mindset. Your work can be presented anytime.”

Beyond the Office
Some of the most valuable lessons happen away from your desk.
Interns are encouraged to explore the company beyond their immediate assignments, whether that means spending time with survey crews in the field, attending an economic development presentation, volunteering in the community, or simply asking another department how they approach a challenge.
Learning and Development Specialist Jacob Hewitt encourages interns to take advantage of every opportunity available.

Where It Can Lead
For many employees, their career at T&H started exactly the same way.
Many of today’s designers, engineers, and project leaders first joined the company as interns. Each year, T&H Signing Day celebrates students returning after graduation, marking the beginning of careers that continue to grow through real project experience, technical training, career conversations, and increasing responsibility.
Luke Conneff, now a Civil Designer, says the transition from intern to full-time employee felt natural because he was already part of the team.
For those who mentor interns, watching that growth is one of the most rewarding parts of the program. Reflecting on interns’ end-of-summer presentations, Principal and Savannah Civil Department Manager Lamar Mercer, PE summed it up best:
“I felt like they were my kids. I was so proud.”
