Thomas & Hutton partnered with a team of architects and engineers from throughout the southeast as part of a design/build team to complete the expansion of the existing Charleston County Detention Center. Thomas & Hutton provided surveying, site civil engineering, and landscape architecture services.
The expansion project consisted of the addition of an approximate 323,000-square foot building on an approximate 8-acre site. The project increased the inmate capacity to a little over 2,000. Thomas & Hutton worked closely with various regulatory agencies in order to expedite the commencement of portions of the project (clearing, demolition, and building pad grading) prior to the completion of the overall site plan permitting. Throughout the project, Thomas & Hutton worked diligently with the other members of the design team, as well as with the Detention Center staff, to ensure no lapse in security or operations occurred during the construction of the project. This expansion doubled the capacity and relieved chronic overcrowding. The expansion has been hailed as a much-needed improvement that improved the efficiency, safety, and living conditions.
