As Chief Executive Officer, Sam McCachern leads Thomas & Hutton’s strategic growth and vision. Since becoming President in 2013 and CEO in 2015, the Company experienced a period of unprecedented expansion from its coastal foundation in Georgia and South Carolina to include locations across the greater Southeast. That growth included several acquisitions in strategic markets.
Sam, a licensed Professional Engineer, began his career with Thomas & Hutton in 1985 after earning a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from NC State University. Over the years, he has become a respected business and community leader, recognized for his professional excellence and civic involvement. In 2023, he was named a Laureate in Junior Achievement’s Savannah Business Hall of Fame. Georgia Trend included Sam in the Georgia 500: Most Influential Leaders in 2022 to 2025, Other recognitions include United Way of the Coastal Empire’s 2024 Craig Harney Spirit of Philanthropy Award, NC State’s CCEE Alumni Hall of Fame (2023) and Volunteer of the Year (2019) by Savannah Technical College.
Active in his community, Sam serves organizations including East Savannah United, Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club of Savannah, United Way of the Coastal Empire (Campaign Chair 2012) and Savannah Technical College Foundation, with past service at Isle of Hope United Methodist Church and the NC State Engineering Foundation. A desire to see others succeed led to an appointment to the State Workforce Development Board by Governor Brian Kemp and service on engineering advisory boards at NC State, Georgia Southern and the University of Georgia.
He is a graduate of Leadership Savannah and Leadership Southeast Georgia.
