20 Nov May Howard Elementary STEM Night
Thank you to Danielle Easterling, Jen Roach, Jason Chambless, and Cassie Falk for representing T&H at May Howard Elementary School’s annual STEM night last night in Savannah. T&H joined a number of other industry professionals and educators providing students, parents, and friends with hands on activities and interactive presentations that help introduce students to the vital role the fields of science, technology, engineering and math have in today’s world.
Each student was given a plate, gumdrops, and toothpicks and challenged to build the tallest structure that could stand on its own. The goal in this exercise is to introduce concepts like load distribution and structural shape comparisons. For example, some kids started by connecting the pieces in a straight line which stood no chance at standing independently. Other students immediately took to building a strong base (load distribution). There were some students that even commented how the activity related to something they learned in geometry class (structure shape comparison). At the end of the exercise, most of the students decided to deconstruct their masterpiece by…eating it.
