Bryan County Highway 280 Roundabout Approved

Bryan County Highway 280 Roundabout Approved

Bryan County residents and motorists will soon be able to traverse the intersection of US 280/SR 30 and Wilma Edwards Road with ease. The Bryan County Commission approved Thomas & Hutton’s design services for the installation of a roundabout for the intersection of US 280/SR 30 at Wilma Edwards Road/Church of God Road in Bryan County. Traffic currently flows freely on US 280, while vehicles on Wilma Edwards Road and Church of God Road are at a stop. It is difficult to turn out onto Highway 280 during peak travel times, leading to delays on Wilma Edwards and Church of God. The installation of a roundabout will provide lower delay times and improve travel time for homeowners and local business owners in the area. The roundabout is also a safer alternative that reduces crashes by a significant number especially those that cause injuries.

Thomas & Hutton performed a traffic study at the intersection using the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) Intersection Control Evaluation (ICE) tool. The study resulted in three alternatives: 1. a minor stop on the minor street, 2. the addition of left-turn lanes on US 280, and 3. a single-lane roundabout. Due to costs and the current poor quality of traffic flow, the single-lane roundabout was determined to be the preferred solution. In addition to the traffic study, we are providing full design services for the project including survey, design, permitting, bid assistance, and coordination with GDOT.
