Decatur Commission Approves Clairmont-Commerce-Church Street Bike/Ped Improvements

On Monday, May 3rd, the Decatur City Commission unanimously approved a contract for Lewallen Construction Company in an agreement with the Georgia Department of Transportation for the Clariemont-Commerce-Church Street Pedestrian Safety and Cycle Track Improvements. Thomas & Hutton will be performing Construction Administration activities for the next 18 months. The project is pursuant to Decatur’s 2008 Community Transportation Plan’s initiative to encourage healthy lifestyles and active living in Decatur. The project will provide a safer gateway for pedestrians and bicyclists to and from downtown Decatur and better facilities for pedestrians and bicyclists traversing the Church Street corridor. Outcomes include reducing road widths at intersections to shorten the time needed to cross the street and providing wider sidewalks, bicycle paths, and multi-use trails on Church Street with the goal of fostering a safe and positive experience for bicyclists of all ages and skill levels.
