14 Apr Belfast Keller I-95 Interchange Receives ACEC Georgia Engineering Excellence Award
Thomas & Hutton (T&H) was presented an Engineering Excellence Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Georgia (ACEC Georgia) at its Georgia Engineering Awards gala held in Atlanta on Saturday, March 19th for their work on the Belfast Keller I-95 Interchange in Bryan County, Georgia. The awards competition recognizes Engineering Excellence Awards recognize engineering achievements demonstrating the highest degree of merit and ingenuity. Entries are rated based on uniqueness and originality; future value to the engineering profession; social, economic, and sustainable development considerations; complexity; and successful fulfillment of client/owner’s needs.
T&H received an ACEC Georgia Honor Award for the creation of a new highway interchange at I-95 and Belfast Keller Road Overpass (Exit 83) in south Bryan County. The interchange is the first of its kind in coastal Georgia, incorporating single-lane roundabouts at the ramp termini. T&H’s analysis concluded that roundabouts would be safer for motorists and extends the lifespan of the interchange while reducing environmental impacts due to the smaller footprint. It opens a new east-west connector in the County, cuts down on commute times and opens a new hurricane evacuation route, and gives increased connectivity for first responders to access. Capitalizing on accessibility to the Port of Savanah, the County has identified the area around the interchange as prime for fostering economic growth including plans for residential development, manufacturing, and warehousing.
