Thomas & Hutton provided design, permitting, and construction services for the new 128,000-square foot convention facility. The project was part of the Jekyll Beach Village Revitalization project that included the convention center building, along with various site improvements (roads, water and sewer infrastructure, drainage, etc.) surrounding the building area. Services included roadway and grading design, roundabout design, wastewater collection system design, LEED site certification, water distribution system design, stormwater system design, construction services, and Shore Protection Act permitting.

In addition, Thomas & Hutton provided design services for a roundabout that consisted of the demolition of an existing intersection and the redevelopment of a pedestrian-friendly oyster shell concrete roundabout. This roundabout is the entry point for the entire island and serves as a focal point for the new Jekyll Island Beach Village project. We were tasked with roundabout design, while not impacting several monumental live oak trees adjacent to the location of the roundabout. This was achieved by the use of landscape island and designing the roundabout as an ellipse.
The Jekyll Island Convention Center is the only oceanfront convention center on the east coast south of New Jersey. Designed and built using sustainable design standards, the project achieved Silver LEED certification. Keeping in mind the fragile ecosystem, as well as the environment of the building, sustainable design included rainwater collection/water efficient landscaping, maximizing open space, innovative wastewater technology, and an 80,000 cistern for storing rainwater. Prior to its completion, the convention center had already booked commitments over the course of four years that represented more than $40 million in economic impact for the Golden Isles. It also spurred the construction of two hotels in the nearby vicinity.
