Thomas & Hutton, teamed with Choate Construction and LS3P Architects, is working on the development of a new 88,000-square foot office building to serve as headquarters for the South Carolina State Ports Authority. The new headquarters will allow SCSPA to house its employees under one roof in a state-of-the-art facility utilizing collaborative work environment concepts on both the interior and exterior of the building. The building features an open floor plan with numerous collaboration spaces. The concept encourages random encounters between co-workers throughout the building, due to its open nature and features, such as a central atrium, cafeteria, fitness center, and numerous collaboration areas.
Features of the site plan include an entrance drive through grand oaks and an arrival courtyard where dignitaries for home and abroad can be greeted with a flag court, outdoor café, reflecting pond, exercise trail, and a spectacular view to the port terminal and the Wando River. The front of the building focuses on the river and terminal and features the formal entry with guest and employee parking. Both front and back have easy pedestrian access to the central lobby. Services provided by Thomas & Hutton include civil engineering, site planning, landscape architecture, permitting, and construction phase services.
