Thomas & Hutton provided design services for the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of SR 23/US 25/US 301 and SR 196. The existing road intersection provided an angled stop control condition and was considered a safety concern due to accident history. The initial step for this project was to conduct a Transportation Impact Analysis which analyzed traffic data, a signalized intersection, roundabout, and cost. It was determined that a roundabout presented a safer solution with less long-term maintenance than a signalized intersection.

The single-lane roundabout was designed to accommodate oversized trucks, as it serves several mobile home parks in the area, deliveries traveling to the port of Brunswick and is a part of the Strategic Highway system in Georgia for the transportation of vehicles between military facilities.

Thomas & Hutton provided the concept development, field surveys, environmental (NEPA) documents, special studies, and construction plans through the project bidding for GDOT. Construction of the project has been completed.  This work is being conducted using the NCHRP 672, an informational guide for roundabouts, and in accordance with GDOT guidelines.
