Thomas & Hutton provided multiple consulting services for the 40-acre mixed-use redevelopment project known as WestEdge.  The project consists of a variety of residential, commercial, and civic uses. As Charleston’s “Discovery District,” WestEdge is designed to be a hub for groundbreaking research, collaboration, and innovation, providing fertile ground and abundant opportunities for business, talent recruitment, investment, and jobs. Surrounded by the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), Roper St. Francis Healthcare, the College of Charleston, and the Citadel, WestEdge is the next generation of research and discovery districts.  MUSC, MUSC Foundation, and The City of Charleston own several properties within the approximately 40-acre area known as WestEdge. The three groups came together to form the Horizon Project Foundation (HPF). Thomas & Hutton planned and designed the complex infrastructure to serve the district.

The project sits on a former municipal landfill and required creative solutions to support the proposed infrastructure while maintaining the vision of the development.  The projects in design/permit/construction include:

    • 99 WestEdge: 1,000-space parking deck with mixed use, multi-family wrap.  The parking deck will be transferred to the City when complete.
    • 10 WestEdge: Approximately 1,000-space parking deck with mixed use, multi-family wrap and a Publix on the ground floor
    • 22 WestEdge: Approximately 150,000-square foot office/research building
    • Phase 0 & 1 Infrastructure: Construction of all the roads and utilities that support the project, which will be City-owned

The WestEdge District includes the detailed design and construction documents for five streets, courtyards, and plazas within the new mixed-use district. The plan includes walkable complete streets, an interconnected bicycle and pedestrian system, engaging public plazas, and active streetscapes that connect to MUSC, the waterfront, and adjacent use.
